The Side Effects of Wearing Flip Flops

Flip-flops are easy to wear. They are popular shoes to purchase in the summer months for their various colors and the ease of slipping them on to go to the beach. Despite their simplicity, frequently wearing this type of shoe may cause uncomfortable foot problems. The majority of flip-flops do not have an arch, which may lead to heel pain. The toes can also begin to hurt as they are constantly gripping the shoe while walking to keep it on the foot. Additionally, cracked heels can be common among people who wear flip-flops. This can be from the shoe having little or no cushioning and the foot can lose support from the lack of a strap. This may cause the calf muscles to work harder and the foot may strike the ground abnormally. If you would like to learn more about the pros and cons of wearing flip-flops, please consult a podiatrist who can accurately answer any questions you may have.

Flip-flops can cause a lot of problems for your feet. If you have any concerns about your feet or ankles, contact one of our podiatrists from Grobowski Foot & Ankle. our doctors will assist you with all of your foot and ankle needs.

Flip-Flops and Feet

Flip-flops have managed to become a summer essential for a lot of people. While the shoes may be stylish and easy to slip on and off, they can be dangerous to those who wear them too often. These shoes might protect you from fungal infections such as athlete’s foot, but they can also give you foot pain and sprained ankles if you trip while wearing them.

When Are They Okay to Wear?

Flip-flops should only be worn for very short periods of time. They can help protect your feet in places that are crawling with fungi, such as gym locker rooms. Athlete’s foot and plantar warts are two common fungi that flip-flops may help protect your feet against.

Why Are They Bad for My Feet?

These shoes do not offer any arch support, so they are not ideal for everyday use. They also do not provide shock absorption or heel cushioning which can be problematic for your feet. Additionally, you may suffer from glass cuts, puncture wounds, and stubbed toes since they offer little protection for your feet.

More Reasons Why They Are Bad for Your Feet

  • They Slow You Down
  • May Cause Blisters and Calluses
  • Expose Your Feet to Bacteria

Puncture Wounds and Splinters in the Foot

Splinters are one of the most common and widespread foreign bodies that may enter the bottom, or sole, of the feet. In addition to splinters, pieces of glass are another very common foreign substance that may enter the feet. When a splinter enters the bottom of the foot, it is important that this foreign substance is removed or the foot may become infected. Additionally, it is important that the entire splinter is removed, not leaving part of the substance still in the feet. The deeper a splinter is in the foot, the more difficult it may be for an individual to actually detect the splinter. Often, a medical professional such as a podiatrist may be needed to help identify where a splinter is. This medical professional will then be able to safely remove the splinter. If you are someone that has a splinter in their foot, or believes that they might, consider contacting a podiatrist today for more information and treatment.

Wound care is an important part in dealing with diabetes. If you have diabetes and a foot wound or would like more information about wound care for diabetics, consult with one of our podiatrists from Grobowski Foot & Ankle. our doctors will assess your condition and provide you with quality foot and ankle treatment.

What Is Wound Care?

Wound care is the practice of taking proper care of a wound. This can range from the smallest to the largest of wounds. While everyone can benefit from proper wound care, it is much more important for diabetics. Diabetics often suffer from poor blood circulation which causes wounds to heal much slower than they would in a non-diabetic.

What Is the Importance of Wound Care?

While it may not seem apparent with small ulcers on the foot, for diabetics, any size ulcer can become infected. Diabetics often also suffer from neuropathy, or nerve loss. This means they might not even feel when they have an ulcer on their foot. If the wound becomes severely infected, amputation may be necessary. Therefore, it is of the upmost importance to properly care for any and all foot wounds.

How to Care for Wounds

The best way to care for foot wounds is to prevent them. For diabetics, this means daily inspections of the feet for any signs of abnormalities or ulcers. It is also recommended to see a podiatrist several times a year for a foot inspection. If you do have an ulcer, run the wound under water to clear dirt from the wound; then apply antibiotic ointment to the wound and cover with a bandage. Bandages should be changed daily and keeping pressure off the wound is smart. It is advised to see a podiatrist, who can keep an eye on it.

Physically active children may be prone to developing Sever’s disease. It is characterized by heel pain and limping, and it can cause pain and discomfort. It generally affects children and young teenagers who participate in running and jumping activities such as basketball, soccer, or football. It affects the growth plate in the heel, and tight calf muscles may lead to tension on the heel. Treatment begins with stopping the activity that caused this condition and resting the affected foot as often as possible. Many people choose to perform low impact activities that can include swimming and cycling, and this may help to strengthen the entire foot. Mild relief may be found by stretching the calf. This is effectively done while standing on a step, and lowering one heel at a time until a gentle stretch is felt. If your active child has any of these symptoms, please speak with a podiatrist as quickly as possible who can offer correct treatment options.

Sever’s Disease

Sever’s disease is also known as calcaneal apophysitis, which is a medical condition that causes heel pain I none or both feet. The disease is known to affect children between the ages of 8 and 14.

Sever’s disease occurs when part of the child’s heel known as the growth plate (calcaneal epiphysis) is attached to the Achilles tendon. This area can suffer injury when the muscles and tendons of the growing foot do not keep pace with bone growth. Therefore, the constant pain which one experiences at the back of the heel will make the child unable to put any weight on the heel. The child is then forced to walk on their toes.

Symptoms

Acute pain – Pain associated with Sever’s disease is usually felt in the heel when the child engages in physical activity such as walking, jumping and or running.

Highly active – Children who are very active are among the most susceptible in experiencing Sever’s disease, because of the stress and tension placed on their feet.

Dealing with Stress Fractures of the Foot and Ankle

Stress fractures occur in the foot and ankle when muscles in these areas weaken from too much or too little use.  The feet and ankles then lose support when walking or running from the impact of the ground. Since there is no protection, the bones receive the full impact of each step. Stress on the feet can cause cracks to form in the bones, thus creating stress fractures.

What Are Stress Fractures?

Stress fractures occur frequently in individuals whose daily activities cause great impact on the feet and ankles. Stress factors are most common among:

  • Runners
  • People affected with Osteoporosis
  • Tennis or basketball players
  • Gymnasts
  • High impact workouts

Symptoms

Pain from the fractures occur in the area of the fractures and can be constant or intermittent. It will often cause sharp or dull pain with swelling and tenderness. Engaging in any kind of activity which involves high impact will aggravate pain.
